what is a "subsequence"?

Does the word "subsequence" implies that the element in the subsequence
must also be consecutive in the original sequence?

For instance, consider this original sequence:
1 2 3 4 5
Is "2 3 4" a subsequence of it?
How about "1 3 5"?
